KHON KAEN is Isan's largest city, lying at the geographical heart of Thailand's sprawling northeast plateau. Situated some 450 km/280 miles from Bangkok, Khon Kaen was established in 1783, and is today a major regional development center and university city. Total provincial population is almost 2 million, while some 200,000 people live in the capital. read more about Khon Kaen.
HOW TO GET THERE: Khon Kaen is serviced three times daily from Bangkok's domestic Don Mueang (DMK) airport, using Thai Airways. Coach/bus transport from the Northeastern Bus Terminal takes approximately 6 1/2 hours, and leaves approximately every half hour. Trains daily from Bangkok's Hualamphong station.
