New Zealand Fly Fishing

Trout aficionados will not want to miss New Zealand for its great fly fishing. Every few years a mammoth 20 kg (45 lb) prize is reported in the highland newspapers of Mackenzie country, on that country's rugged and pristine south island. While such behemoths are not common, they are definitely not rare, and our guide Marianne Murray claimed the prize just last year. Today, her 23 kg trout hangs proudly taxidermied above her mantle. The dilemma, no doubt, would have been whether to forfeit its wonderfully edible meat for a lifetime of visual pleasure.

Murray is partner to Frank Schlosser, a legend in the fishing world, and referred to locally as "The Tiger Woods of Fishing." While not indulging in his other favorite pastime of painting, Schlosser can be found traipsing around the world to some of the earth's best -- and least accessible -- fishing spots. A lucky few each year can also join his New Zealand fishing seminars, which he teams up at Glenbrook Station near Lake Tekapo during October with B&B maven Penni Kelland. The packages include all gear, plus room, board, delicious fish (or lamb) dinner nightly, and incomparable instruction in the art of fly fishing. Your choice is $500 per day (about $250 US) for private, or about $800 NZ per person for a 5-day course. Whatever, it's still a bargain, as the New Zealand dollar is roughly two for one with the US currency.

Note that Frank is so popular, he doesn't need a web site. But that does not mead he is a Luddite. You can email his company Ahuriri River Guides at murrayriver@xtra.co.na Penni also hosts B&B accommodation separately from Frank, plus self-contained cabins on her massive sheep property. Inquiries at Glenbrook Station.
