Earlier this year, a fire broke out in the overhead baggage compartment on a JetBlue flight. One or more loose batteries may have been the source of the fire. Likewise, an overheated battery ignited onboard an American Airlines aircraft flying from Argentina. In each case, airline employees responded quickly, extinguishing the fire and safely landing the aircraft. Precautions include storing spare batteries in original retail packaging; covering loose batteries with insulating tape to avoid contact with metal objects; sealing batteries in separate plastic bags. Likewise, use only chargers designed for the battery type and take steps to prevent crushing, puncturing or dropping them.
