Fun Fare at Thai Food Festival
Khon Kaen, the capital of Thailand's Isan region, will host an inaugural Isan Food Festival on 7-16 March 2008, in conjunction with a Thai Cuisine Masterclass Weekend scheduled on 8-9 March at the Sofitel Raja Orchid. Thailand's remote north-east Isan region is renowned for some of the Kingdom's tastiest cooking but is a cuisine relatively unfamiliar to foreign visitors. Isan cooking is alive with the flavours of neighbouring Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and Isan eateries have recently become very trendy in Bangkok. Unlike the coconut cream curries of the south, dishes here rely on local ingredients such as delicious gai yang grilled chicken, som tom green papaya salad, delicious chilli jams, and sticky or glutinous rice. The area also hosts the finest examples of ancient Khmer temples to be seen outside of Cambodia, along with the country's most intricate silk weaving.
Globetrotting Gourmet is organizing a 10-day, small-group deluxe gastronomic adventure to Thailand that takes in the food festival and has an optional six-day add-on to Burma.
