Kampot is a riverside village in Cambodia, near the former French colonial beach retreat of Kep. Little visited today, except by local Khmer tourists, it is renowned for producing one of the world's finest peppers. If you are a fan of Tellicherry from the Malabar Coast in India, for example, you will absolutely adore these large berries. The aroma literally springs out of the bag, and the hot taste slightly eucalyptus. Alas, we've not found it outside of Cambodia, and even here it's a scarce find. If visiting the Angkor ruins in Siem Reap, head to Senteurs d'Angkor on "Bar Streeet." We hear leading hotel chefs buy it in bulk for their signature dishes, but its not cheap, even in this impoverished country. We're organizing a taste taste against Kampot and pricey Sarawak and Talamanca del Caribe varieties, and will be reporting back the findings in our 3rd qrt tgtgNewsletter in August. |
