Songkran,
held on and around April 13, marks the traditional Thai New Year. It is
a time to pay homage to Buddha, do some spring cleaning in the home, and
sprinkle water in a symbolic gesture of cleansing. But be forewarned,
interlopers venturing out on the streets of any Thai city are likely to
get a thorough dousing of icy water, and a mud mask to boot. Indeed, the
only safe hideout is your hotel room. But, it is all in good fun, and
as the festivities are held during the hottest time of the year, many
find it a refreshing blast. But a bit of advise: put your wallet - not
to mention camera - in a plastic bag! |
