Japanese inventions
  Despite its former reputation for manufacturing cheap transistor radios, Japanese voted instant noodles and karaoke as their two greatest inventions of the 20th century. Ramen noodles is the invention of Momofuku Ando, who made his first batch by dunking freshly cooked wheat noodles in chicken soup before flash flying. The result is legend.
 
 
 
 
Immigration laws
  New immigration laws mean travelers who don’t need visas into the US must now register their trip READ MORE>> online three days before entry into the country. The new rule takes effect Jan '09. Meanwhile, two fingerprints are no longer enough for entering the US. All 10 digits will now be recorded, with all airports set to comply by the end of this year.

 
 
 
 
Fewer airline seats
 

Airlines will offer nearly 60 million fewer seats in the final '08 quarter. The latest figures from the OAG (Official Airline Guide) reveals a 7% drop both in the number of flights and in seats, compared with the same time last year. While Asia also shows a decrease in capacity, tourism numbers across the Mekong continue as the fastest growing in the world, with double digit growth in Vietnam and Cambodia. Meanwhile, airplane sales are still soaring, but near-term firm orders are expected to be pushed back rather than cancelled.

 

 
 
 
 
Angkor National Museum
 

Angkor National Museum is a private museum, co-built with Cambodian and Thai investors. It is brand new, and many statues from ancient temples and digs are not identified, nor dated. Doco films range from interesting to facile, and the question keeps arising, "why am I here when the world's greatest museum is outdoors? " The gift shop, while very pricey, is worth a visit for top-quality silk products, books and clothing. A shopping mall is slated as an adjunct to the museum, but at time of printing, was still unfinished. $12 entry, payable in cash or credit card.
