| Passport Tampering |
| |
Our write up last issue about passport security tampering elicited the following advice from a reader in Vancouver, USA: I had already marked this in the Magellans catalog (www.magellans.com) as something I need to buy. The following may be a solution to stolen unsafe integrated circuit information:
RFID Blocking Passport Holder. Passports and other forms of ID are now being imbedded with radio-frequency (RF) tags that can be read by security scanners at airports and retail stores. Unfortunately, hackers know how to scan those tags too, gaining access to identity theft. This RFID Blocking Passport Holder acts as a protective shield for passport, ID and credit cards, so your RF data can only be accessed when you remove them from the holder at approved locations. Under $20. |

| Loose Batteries |
| |
As of Jan '08, it's illegal to pack loose lithium batteries in checked baggage. This comes after our own report about airplane fires caused by the batteries overheating and igniting. (See 3rd Qtr '07 tgtgNewsletter) Batteries are still permitted in checked luggage if installed in electronic devices, and a max of two in carry-on baggage if stored in plastic bags. safetravel.dot.gov |

| Nudist air service |
| |
A German travel agency is taking bookings for the world’s first nudist air service. The flight is reportedly part of a summer day trip, flying from Erfurt to a popular Baltic Sea resort starting from July. Passengers interested in the service undress after boarding, baring all in the air. Enthusiasts need to redress after landing. |

| Pink Flights for Mardi Gras |
| |
Australia's largest outdoor celebration and the country's biggest tourism money spinner, Sydney Gay Mardi Gras parade is typically viewed by some 600,000, and another 16,000 at the post dance party, which this year headlined Olivia Newton-John and Cyndi Lauper. Conde Nast Traveler lists it as one of the 10 most spectacular costume events, right up there with Venice and Rio. Bonus points to Air New Zealand for chartering its first “Pink Flight” from San Francisco. Passengers were feted with on-board music, contests and screenings of classic gay-themed films. Pink-themed food, cocktails, goodie bags and a “Party Party Wake-Up” before landing. The question arises, how did the Kiwi mascot pip the Flying Kangaroo, Qantas? Air New Zealand also gave away spaces on its parade float. www.airnewzealand.com/pinkflight |

| On the A380 |
| |
As the world's largest aircraft, the A380 boasts impressive statistics. To date Singapore Airlines owns the first two in the world, initially flying Singapore to Sydney, and as of March, Singapore to London. With exactly 471 seats, that's a lot of people to pack in, and we would especially loathe flying it with a budget carrier. Unfortunately, some airlines envision loading nearly 800 in the fuselage. Luckily, there's no prospect of that happening in the near future -- at least until Airbus catches up on its long-delayed production. In addition to the two A380s already in service, SQ has a further 17 on firm order and options for six more from Airbus.
Boarding the SQ A380 is a bit like a cattle station, with serpentine queues both for check in and again at boarding (inspite of the specially-constructed two-tiered sky bridges). But inside, the plane is a marvel, with extra wide business class seats, sumptuous private suites on first, and full size individual video screens in economy -- with some 100 channels at-demand programming in all classes. . On the negative side, there's not enough toilets, and seat signing is hard to locate. The lower deck is shared by first and economy class, while he upper deck business and economy. If flying coach, go for the upstairs, as seating is only 2-4-2, versus 3-4-3 below. There is also a spiral staircase connecting the two cattle classes, but if it is an available toilet you're looking for, forget it! |

| Unused vacation time |
| |
Expedia reports that American save their employers some $21 Billion annually in unused vacation time. Paid vacations were introduced to the US during the 1930s Great Depression, but short two and three week stints lag behind international standards. By contrast the French enacted two weeks paid vacation into law in 1936, threw in a 40% train fare deduction, then increased holidays to three weeks in 1956, a fourth in 1969, and now a grand total of five week. |
